[english]

fieldwork.
for the first piece pali mersault digs manaus’ sounds of the city.

“At the beginning of winter 2007-2008, Pali Meursault spent 15 days in Mamori Lake with other sound artists from all around the world in the frame of Mamori Art Lab. Then he spent a week in Manaus and made field-recordings for a radio project. The final shape of the piece was not predetermined: a material started to exist from his drifts through the city, through the people he met. When Radio Grenouille invited him to make a Radia show, this gave him a frame.
So Bloody Manaus is at the same time a travel diary, the recomposition of a soundscape and an immersion into this singular city. It’s also a subjective and inevitably superficial point of view, something between sociological amazement and musical fascination for a deafening city.” [E.N.]

Pali Meursault is a sound artist who lives and works in Grenoble, France. His works are published on Universinternational in France, Entr’acte in Great Britain and And/oar in the USA. He regularly collaborates with the artists collective Ici-Même.

for the second piece maksims shentelev walks the fields of nodar, portugal:

“[…] Recording of resonating tanks is left untreated, while it skins over with multi textural layers […] fluent narrative soundscape, whose vibrant shiftiness of scales uncovers conditionality of perception […]” [M.S.]

“‘Variations of Scale’ is a contextual continuation of ”soundscape mapping” project developed in Nodar, Portugal, during FRONTE[I]RAS 07, international meeting of transdisciplinary arts. The backbone of “Variations” is formed by fieldmix of water tanks, recorded during Fronteiras in the village of Nodar. Recording of resonating tanks is left untreated, while it skins over with multi textural layers of sound material gathered in different places during recent years. This blend is forming fluent narrative soundscape, whose vibrant shiftiness of scales uncovers conditionality of perception.” [R.R.]

credits
miss.gunst would like to thank the following artists and sound collectors:

Ends & Entries

Ends & Entries ist Teil des ‘Cities on the edge’-Partnerprogramms.

Rádio Zero (Lisboa), SounDart Radio (Dartington, UK), free103point9 (New York City), Radio Corax (Halle, DE), radio x (Frankfurt am Main), Radio Campus (Brussels), Orange (Vienna).

Ends & Entries
Marseille, Liverpool, Gdańsk, Istanbul, Napoli

Listening into five European cities in transition: Ends & Entries is a series of fifteen 7-minutes sound pieces specially made for the radio by international sound artists about five cities: Liverpool, Marseille, Gdansk, Napoli and Istanbul, as part of the ‘Cities on the edge’ partnership. The project is curated by Etienne Noiseau for Radio Grenouille, a cultural radio station in Marseille, in the frame of its residency in Liverpool’08, November 2008.

The project is about the cities. All these cities are “ends” and “entries” of Europe, big ports, with a long history, more open to the international side than integrated to their own countries, of mixed population, industrial cities on decline that tend to take a second breath with culture.
It was decided to work on traditional music, food (’cuisine’), and migration; how music and food are cultural markers of identity; two things that we all “carry” with ourselves and share or mix with whatever we find in the place we are.

In each city, artists who live or work there deal with the subject and present their own perception of the city through the chosen thematics using their own expressivity through sound.

With: Krzysztof Topolski aka Arszyn, Adam Witkowski and Wojciech Kucharczyk for Gdansk; Chris Watson, Alan Dunn and Vergil Sharkya’ for Liverpool; Chantal Dumas, Laure Maternati and Thomas Lippens for Marseille; Burcin Elmas, Deniz Kologlu and Batur Sönmez for Istanbul; Roberto Paci Dalò, Olivier Féraud and Soundbarrier Collective for Napoli.

Ends & Enties is being broadcasted from 17 to 23 November as a whole on Radio Grenouille in Marseille and Açik Radyo in Istanbul, and partly on National Radio Gdansk and BBC Liverpool - and in different settings by the following members of radia.fm art radio network:
Rádio Zero (Lisboa), SounDart Radio (Dartington, UK), free103point9 (New York City), Radio Corax (Halle, DE), radio x (Frankfurt am Main), Radio Campus (Brussels), Orange (Vienna).
The works will also be available on podcast from Radio Grenouille website (www.grenouille888.org).
Further information on the project is made available on the Radio Grenouille website for Ends & Entries.

On radio x, broadcasting starts on November 14th with a GUNSTradio special of one hour, introducing the project and presenting a selection of the pieces.
Further transmissions of Ends & Entries - each with a new selection - follow over the next weeks.

“[…] a complete mix of the synthetic and the organic. With a live performance by Hungarian artist Mike Rosoft at the UltraSound Festival (Budapest, 2007 Spring). Attila Kenyeres is using his Apple computer to make soundscapes, and his first album at the Hungarian netlabel Syrup is called An Hour. To make a full proof of what the Machintosh is good for in case of no matter how wet or dry weather, the second part is a fluid sample from the Thematic Day on the Danube at Tilos. It features Hungarian poet Attila József’s poem At the Danube first in Romanian, then in a 4-voice chorus in Hungarian with the sounds of a walk at the Danube in the background. (Although we don’t speak any Romanian here either - you’ll hear how easier it is to understand if you know French, Italian or other Latin-related languages than our Finno-Ugrian original - and that is not only because the Hungarian voice is quadruple.) The Romanian version is poetry and language for its own sake accompanied by music exclusively following the mood of the recital.”

followed by a hymn on “spring” magazine sporting wonderul and weird comic art by women artists.
and last but not least we’ll add a portion of radio art dedicated to those missing our usual radiator x show.

our motto for this part o our bookfair special (yes, there’s another one we broadcast during the following hour - see radiator x) is: ladies’ choice.
ok, we do not really know what today’s well-behaved gentlewoman would prefer to read. however, we know what we want: a new women’s magazine.
pardon? sure. and these days will see the launch of THE new women’s magazine: missy magazine!
mrs. pepstein - our radio colleague usually inviting radio blau’s listeners from leipzig to join mrs. pepstein’s wonderful weird world - talked to the makers of missy mag:
chris köver and stefanie lohaus - together with sonja eismann the missy core team - grace her and now us with anwers and a peak preview into THE new women’s mag of today.
spending one hour with mrs. pepstein and her all star guests and (not to forget:) a great choice of great music is the best we can do while waiting for the day to come…
… and afterwards miss.gunst will add some hot hints for friends’n'fans of contemporary cartoonists that carry us to the second hour of our bookfair special (see the related entry for the radiator x-show, amour! bonheur!).

find more info on missy magazine at missy-magazine.de and don’t miss mrs. pepsteins next shows (they’re always wonderful) at radio blau, leipzig. for more infos on mrs. pepsteins wonderful world visit mrs. pepstein’s blog as well as the archive of mrs. pepstein’s world. in case you desperately missed our special as well as mrs. pepstein’s original show you may find the interview parts at least (sorry, in this case without the music) as a podcast at the podcast archive of radio blau.

miss.gunst would like to thank mrs. pepstein for sharing a wonderful hour with/in mrs. pepstein’s wonderful world as well as chris köver and stefanie lohaus for sharing the secrets of the making of the greatest women’s mag ever with us: missy magazine!
and here is the playlist for roughly the first hour of our special:
peter i. tchaikovsky: valse sentimentale, played by clara rockmore on the theremin
julia holter: moto perpetuo - missy elliott: work it - barbara morgenstern: come to berlin - soap&skin: janitor of lunity - britta: was alles fehlt - kevin blechdom: binaca - chicks on speed: plastic surgery

[english]

how are stories told with sound(s)?
two different proposals to answer this question:
in the first part of the show gina mattiello and pia palme introduce a composition dedicated to the dutch composer jacob van eyck (1589-1657):

“Jacob van Eyck was a remarkable composer of the florishing early baroque period in the Netherlands: born blind, of noble family, educated in music, he turned into a renowned organist, recorder-player, composer and carilloneur. He was famous for his ability to tune bells and carillons. Pia Palme, composing and playing modern recorders, uses contemporary means for her homage to her famous predecessor. A subbass-recorder without its headpiece is used to create sound by means of finely balanced inner microfones and feedback-techniques; sounds which remind of bells, including very deep basses. For the composition Palme plays and processes themes from Eyck’s recorder-pieces by means of electronics.
Texts by John Milton ((1608 – 1674), who turned blind in the course of his life, add another dimension. The title is a quotation from Milton’s poem: “On his Blindness”, describing the author’s willingness to just stand and wait instead of acting.” [G.M/P.P.]

the piece is based on a concert/performance taking place oct 11 & 12, 2008 at MUSEUM AUF ABRUF (MUSA), with: pia palme (feedbacktubes, electronics), yoshie maruoka (performance) and gina mattiello (voice).

afterwards, ricardo reis presents a pastiche made of sounds that consist of traces of and references to other sounds:

“What kind of space is build by mixed references and what story can be build with them?
This lie that I bring you is a deception on senses. Like hidden small children hitting keys on a loose keyboard behind a curtain in front of an intelectual assistance. Well, what kind of “great art” do they perceive? Another way to put it is to go to a party and jump around conversations. Call it collage, call it pastiche but also composing and directing. It’s all about this: cut this bit here and join it there and present it through this very small door opening. What does it mean? The answer is, off course, between each pair of ears.” [R.R.]

credits
miss.gunst would like to thank the following artists and sound collectors:
jovica for the space machine, corsica s for some beautiful radiator sounds;
gina mattiello and pia palme from radio orange, vienna for sharing with us the story of a fantasy in echoe(s);
ricardo reis from radio zero, lisbon, for inviting us to expore the space of stories untold, yet existent between our ears;
as well as radia.fm radio art network for being a crowd of incredibly creative partners.

[english]

specialities from brussels - however not exactly what you’d expect to get from the famous local chocolatiers, for these pralinés are filled with sounds.

in the first part of the show jan de pauw and students from RITS provide insights into the state of radio art in belgium:

“On the first of March 2008, the Radio Department of RITS (an audiovisual arts college in Brussels) existed 10 years and this was celebrated with a weekend filled with lectures, radio performances, listening moments,…
Central guest was Gregory Whitehead, radio guru and all-round audio artist. Jan De Pauw (Brussels based culturual philosopher) wrote a ‘State Of Radio’ for this 10th anniversary.
In this Radia show, you can listen to this ‘State Of Radio’ in Belgium, as well as some audio works and soundscapes first grade students made at the Radio Department of RITS. ” [XL Air]

afterwards vincent matyn-wallecan invites us to a house in schaerbeek, brussels, to join a very special piano concert:

There is a house in Schaerbeek, Brussels. There was the possibility to produce a sound install. In the house is a grand piano. I recorded each single note of the piano, each note separately, holding my finger on the key until the note truly died. Stereo microphones were placed inside the body of the grand piano, and as the notes died out they captured also the growing sounds all around: city life, people working upstairs and myself moving around.
Each note and its subsequent sound environnement became a file, each note/file was distributed along six tracks, and so their order was decided by this limitation and the particular lenght of each note. The composition was made by itself, some kind of musical ready made. There are no effects, the only manipulations made are the removal of the attack of each note, and some reorganisation of the distribution of the notes.
The composition is at times blissfull and at other times it’s gloomy, but I didn’t decide that. ” [V. M.-W.]

fresh radio art from lissabon - where from september 20th to september 28th, 2008 the radio art festival RadiaLx takes place, hosted by our radia.fm partner station radio zero.
numerous radio-active artists followed the invitation to contribute new shows as well as treasures from their personal archives.
radio x takes part with the radiator x production autphones lxtended - a radio concert by michael gambacurta and matthias s. krüger based on their autophones project (for more info about autophones see the GUNStradio-blog on radio x and and the related GUNSTprojects entry).
in exchange radiator x presents a RadiaLx Special with two delicious shows from the festival program:
radiophonic tape poetry by tapenoise (UK) and radio romantic by the beautiful schizophonic aka jorge mantas (PT).

the piece from tapenoise is based on an idea of environment,

“creating an environment through the medium of recording - a mix of disparate elements-conversation, poetry, acoustic instruments, field recordings and sounds made in the studio using outdated equipment such as tape machines and analogue synths. Contributors from TapeNoise are: Ben, Dex and Hugh.”

radio romantic fullfills the promise of its title - inviting us into a sounding cosmos haunted by melancholic memories of radio hours lost in time and space, yet carrying us from la recherche du temps perdu to a temps retouvé in the experience of radio.
