TEXTILER WIDERSTAND. Probleme und/als Potenziale

So verführerisch es ist, technische Begriffe auf gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Konstellationen zu übertragen: neben möglicherweise Erkenntnis stiftenden Potenzialen ist in der Regel auch mit Risiken zu rechnen, die mit der rhetorischen Macht der Metaphorik einher gehen können. Gerade das macht es aber auch erst richtig interessant, das Spannungsfeld nicht nur theoretisch auszuloten, sondern zugleich auf die Praxis zu schauen. Funktioniert das – und wenn ja: Wie?

Für eine solche Probe aufs Exempel ist "Textiler Widerstand" ein geeigneter Kandidat – gerade weil er (im Deutschen, anders als im Englischen) per se sowohl technisch als auch kulturell verstanden und verwendet werden kann, ohne dass der eine Gebrauch den anderen automatisch assoziiert. Anders gesagt: Beide Auslegungen zusammen zu denken ist insofern ein willkürlicher Akt, der als solcher nachgerade notwendiger Weise die Frage nach guten Gründen bzw. Begründungen impliziert und es im selben Zug erleichtert, Spannungen und Kontingenzen aufzuzeigen.

In diesem Sinne will der Vortrag die Gelegenheit wahrnehmen, genau dies zu versuchen und zum Abschluss der Reihe "Textile Resistance" einen Blick zurück nach vorn zu werfen, der in seine Perspektive auch einige der Positionen einbezieht, die in den bisherigen Vorträgen und Workshops vorgestellt wurden.

TEXTILE R* – Potentials and/as Problems

What is it that makes borrowing technical terms for talking about social and cultural constellations so tempting? Indeed the rhetorical power of metaphors often feels convincing, and it also can bear potentials for further insight. But then we should not forget there are some risks as well. Technical systems are different from social systems – and thus each transfer comes with a transformation. In the end, this makes it even more challenging to further examine the field not only theoretically, but also to look at the practice: Does it work? And if so, how does it work exactly?

The German term "Textiler Widerstand" is a perfect candidate for asking these questions, as we are led directly to the core of the center of the mentioned problems and/as potentials: German language itself reads resistors and resistance in one, thus "Widerstand" can be successfully applied to both the technical item and the cultural/political attitude without necessarily connecting the former with the latter. In voluntarily doing so, however, one is almost automatically in the need to think about good reasons and/or possible problems, tensions and contingencies.

The talk will take the opportunity to try this and to finish the programme "Textile Resistance" with a review looking forward, including also some of the positions and projects presented previously as part of the whole series of lectures and workshops.
