theremin transformations
radia #478: theremidi orchestra + radia #199: our domestic radiation
[pls. scroll down for english version]

oscillatory circuits, electromagnetic fields – and an instrument that is played without ever touching it: the theremin.
since 1919 it's ethereal sounds are mesmerizing us again and again and anew. also for it is being played in various new and different ways. like today…
in the first part of the show we are invited to a concert of the theremidi orchestra – which is not only delivering a new vocabulary of sounds, but also transforming the instrument itself:
"Theremidi is a made-up-word, a hybrid of thermin and midi controller. Theremidi Orchestra (TO) is a verb, an ongoing workshop of noise and drone production. The hands-on electro noise ensemble exists in the present continuous, but refers also to the history of electronic music. TO has a DIY (do-it-yourself) and DIWO (do-it-with-others) approach in making music / sound experiments, making our own instruments (theremidi, micronoise, touch-tone…), based on open-source technologies. Currently, the Theremidi Orchestra consists of 9 active members, coming from different study or professional backgrounds. Every Monday TO meets at Ljudmila = Ljubljana Digital Media Lab to practice and develop soundscapes and build DIY sound devices. Theremidi Orchestra is a process of mutual understanding and solving problems in a horizontal manner. First it led us to abort the need for a central figure of sound technician or conductor. The process of production involves experimentation with sound outputs, mutually composed music scores, shared responsibilities for individual parts of the process, etc.
The featured track has been recorded by Radio Student. The first 6:40 minutes is a fragment of a live performance at TRESK #5 Festival with sound artist and dancer Irena Tomažin at Kino Šiška Cultural Centre. The rest of the track has been recorded live at Radio Student for DJ Seansa morning radio show."
Theremidi Orchestra's active members are: Simon Bergo?, Tina Dolinšek, Luka Frelih, Ida Hiršenfelder, Dare Peji?, Tilen Sepi?, Saša Spa?al, Robertina Šebjani?, Dušan Zidar, Isac Petruzzi, Ian Soroka.

afterwards, we are invited for another time by anna friz to toronto for an acoustic research on the electromagnetic fields in her apartment – and, indeed, there is also a theremin being played:
"Our Domestic Radiation (2009): A composition made from the imagined and actual intercepted fields of electro-magnetic and acoustic signals in and around my apartment in Toronto, Canada. This piece seeks to express some of the wireless action surging daily on site. I am particularly interested in the relative flatness and depth perceivable in both acoustic and Hertzian space, and in the diminishing horizon in the city as a result of urban design and an exponential increase in wireless infrastructure (or electro-magnetic clutter). Additional filters include mason jars, theremin, ring modulator, staged interference, and delay. […]" [A.F.]

miss.gunst would like to thank the following artists and sound collectors:
jovica for the space machine, corsica s for some beautiful radiator sounds;
the theremidi orchestra and radio student, ljubljana, as well as anna friz and radio free103point9, new york, for new variations on and of the good old theremin;
and, as always radia.fm radio art network for being a crowd of incredibly creative partners.
